Getting tossed allover by the identities society gives us can be draining and really tiring. Do we define ourselves by the way our bodies look, our careers, relationship status or even our social status? For most of us, it’s when we hit rock bottom; we lose our jobs, relationships fail and the things that we based our identity on are scraped off that we ask, “who am I without…?” It leaves us with a void.

Other times, it’s things like failure that make us doubt who we really are. Does this failure mean I’m a loser? That my life will never amount to anything? Does this addiction I’m struggling with mean I’ll always be a slave to it? Does his rejection mean I’m not good enough?

What gives you identity?Who do you believe you are; without the titles of your career or relationships? If things don’t go your way, who do you remain to be, at the core of your being? No matter what happens around you: what characteristics define you, more so as a Christian?

That’s what we’re gonna be talking about today.

I personally struggled with identity for a long time and was always swayed by things outside of me. I didn’t know that my identity should be based on the inside. Lack of identity is what drew me closer to God because I wanted to have a really strong foundation about who I am. I was tired of others and societal trends defining me and telling me who I am.

You can read more about my story here.

Knowing who you are, without the ‘decorations’ of our careers, relationships and what have you, is really important especially when things don’t go your way. Your identity should be based on a rock : Jesus Christ. That you may never be shaken.

This is my(and your) identity in Christ;

1.I am a child of God

Some, however, did receive him and believed in him; so he gave them the right to become God’s children. They did not become God’s children by natural means, that is, by being born as the children of a human father; God himself was their Father.
John 1:12‭-‬13

This means I have a Father who loves me, takes care of me, protects me and provides for me. So no matter what changes around me, I will always be a child of God.

2. I am loved(& lovable)

For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below — there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38‭-‬39

Never ever forget or doubt God’s love for you. His love is not like that of human beings. His love doesn’t fade. No matter what someone said or did, you’re still the apple of God’s eye.

3. I am fully known

LORD , you have examined me and you know me. You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts. You see me, whether I am working or resting; you know all my actions. Even before I speak, you already know what I will say.
Psalms 139:1‭-‬4

It’s heartbreaking sometimes when people misunderstand us, especially those close to us. But there’s One who knows you to the core. The one who understands you past, present and future. Always remember that.

4. I am fearfully and wonderfully made

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
Psalms 139:14

You’re a wonderful creation, inside-out. Your inner being is beautiful and magical. Someone else may not see it, but God does. Because He created you and thought you were amazing. So should you!

5.I am free

Freedom is what we have — Christ has set us free! Stand, then, as free people, and do not allow yourselves to become slaves again.
Galatians 5:1

As a child of God, you’re not a slave to addictions or given thought patterns. Whatever you feel enslaved to Christ says you are free. He died for you to be free. Surrender your struggles to Him and let Him lead you to freedom. And freedom starts in your mind. Proclaim, I am free in Christ and do whatever you need to do to be truly free. (If it’s therapy, go for it)

6.I am set apart

For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
Deuteronomy 14:2

This means that your behavior shouldn’t conform to that of the world. Be who God has called you to be through His Word. There should be something different about you .Stand your ground about your beliefs no matter what direction the world is moving. Embrace your difference. You’re not meant be like everyone else.

7. I am worth dying for

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.
John 3:16

You may feel insignificant, but God thinks you’re worth dying for. So the next time someone tries to devalue you , remember what Christ did for you and what He thinks of you. You’re valued!

8.I am gifted

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

See those dreams and desires God has planted in your heart to fulfill, He has equipped you for them. Yes YOU CAN. When He made you, He put in you the gifts to get to the destiny He prepared you for. So walk with confidence, no matter the obstacles and failures you may face, believing that you’re really equipped to do what God has called you to do.

Bonus; I am a new being-

Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

You’re forgiven and your past doesn’t define you. The enemy may try to make you feel like you’re still trapped in the past and even try to drag you back there, but you’re a new being now. You have new dreams and desires. New habits and thoughts. Affirm that.

The above characteristics are what define you, no matter what. See yourself as God sees you; as His child, one who is fully known and loved, gifted, free, set apart, valuable, wonderfully and fearfully made and a new being in Christ Jesus. That is who you are.

So timely. Something I’ve been meditating on. A number of times we find our identity on things and people or seasons…yet all these changes. But when we build it on Jesus, we remain so to eternity because He is a constant.
