You may have watched the movie ‘WAR ROOM’ in 2015 but reading the book is a totally different experience. Important scenes and moments don’t bypass as you have the luxury to highlight the words and take in the lessons bit by bit.
I read it as an eBook: 400 pages in total without the discussion questions at the end.As a slow reader it took me about 2 months to get done with it but every moment was worth it. It has really helped me in my spiritual life especially on being intentional about prayer and today I’d want to share my top 5 lessons and quotes from the book.
1.Fight the real enemy
Incase you have not read the book, it is based on a struggling marriage at the start with so much arguments and flights. Each spouse only sees the wrong in the other and they almost give up on each other. But once Elizabeth (the wife) opens up to Miss Clara about it, Miss Clara advices her to get on her knees and pray for her man (& marriage) instead of always fighting him. To fight the devil who was working hard on destroying their marriage
And this really spoke to me because sometimes our relationships with our parents, friends or partners is really struggling and we maybe always fighting each other. But sometimes the real enemy isn’t the other person but the devil who’s trying to destroy your relationship because he knows the great things your relationship can bring forth. So get on your knees and pray for the other person. As John 10:10 says,“The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy…”
2. Prayer is a war and you need a battle plan.
As Priscilla Shirer ( the lead actress in the movie) says, the devil has a plan on how to destroy your future, you also need a plan on how to come against his evil tactics. As you pray for your life, you friends , relatives, work on those specific areas the enemy is trying to attack.
3.Only God can change others
Elizabeth wanted her husband to really change and at first she did it wrongly by being always argumentative, impatient and always focusing on the things he did wrong.
But only God can change the person starting from their hearts. So again, pray for person and let God do the rest.
4. Be specific in prayer.
Tell Jesus what you want! Exactly what you want. Need I emphasize this? Don’t beat around the bush with God. You need healing from you back ache? Need a well paying job near home? Don’t be too scared to tell God about it, He really cares about the specifics whether in the small or big things.
5.Prayer changes the person who prays.
This mostly applies when we ask why need to pray yet God knows every one of our needs. This is one of the reasons; that He wants to change us. As we pray for the person doing us wrong, He also points us to our own wrongs and how we can change.
Favorite quotes from the book :
He looks for those that seek Him with their whole heart, and He does incredible things in their lives. So it all comes down to this. Either we truly seek Him, or we didn’t.
For real change to happen deep in the soul, God tended to make people miserable rather than. He brought them to end of themselves and showed them how powerless they were in order to show them how powerful He was.
The believer’s job was to come to God with a surrendered heart. To come empty-handed every morning not to get what you wanted but to receive all of who He was and what He wanted for you.
The only really satisfying life was found in living for God and following Jesus.
That’s I have for today about the book: WAR-ROOM. To get the real and raw juice, read the book!!
